Coronavirus: Active cases drop to 5,444; 607 dead

Ghana has in recent days seen a decline in the number of active COVID-19 cases.

As at Friday, February 26, the number of active cases stood at 5,444.

Providing updates on the country’s COVID-19 status, President Akufo-Addo said infection rate now stands at 400 with 77,972 recoveries.

“Since I last spoke, 191 more people have sadly passed away, bringing the number of cumulative deaths to 607, and 24 persons are critically ill”, the President said on Sunday, February 28, 2021.

The country has been racing with time to curb the spread of the virus since it recorded its first two cases in March 2020.

Ghana has received 600,000 doses of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine made by the Serum Institute of India via the COVAX facility.

Some 43 districts including COVID-19 epicenters have been targeted as the vaccine campaign begins on March 2.

Allaying fears about the safety of the vaccines, President Akufo-Addo said: “Taking the vaccine will not alter your DNA, It will not embed a tracking device in your body, neither will it cause infertility in women or in men”.

“As your President, I want to assure you that the vaccine is safe”, he stated.
